Position:

POST OF DIRECTOR

Overview:

The National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), University of Colombo, invites applications/nominations for the Post of Director. Applicants/nominees must be Sri Lankan citizens and under 63 years of age. The appointment term is three years or until the appointee reaches 65 years, whichever comes first.

NILIS is a UGC-approved institute affiliated with the University of Colombo, offering programs in Library and Information Sciences (Certificates, Diplomas, and Postgraduate Degrees). Its student body primarily consists of working professionals from public and private sector libraries. The institute also engages in research and consultancy.

Role of the Director:

• Principal Executive, Academic, and Accounting Officer of NILIS.
• Ex-officio member of the Board of Management and Academic Committee.
• Responsibilities include:
• Providing academic leadership.
• Formulating and implementing management policies.
• Ensuring general administration, transparency, accountability, and discipline.
• Understanding client and staff needs, generating funds, and fostering collaborations (University-Institute-industry and international).

Qualifications and Expectations:

• High academic caliber and integrity.
• Strong research publication record.
• Proven leadership, interpersonal skills, and policy understanding.
• Visionary with intellectual and managerial excellence.

Appointment Process:

The University Grants Commission (UGC) appoints the Director from a panel of three candidates recommended by NILIS’s Board of Management.

Remuneration:

Salary equivalent to a professor, plus applicable allowances.

2. Evidence of:

• Academic/research excellence.
• Professional communications.
• Managerial competence and leadership.

1. Statement of vision for NILIS’s development.
2. Proposed achievements if appointed.
3. Consent letter (for nominees).
4. Employer release letter (if employed in Public Sector/Corporations/Statutory Bodies/other Higher Educational Institutions).

Interview Process:

• In-person interviews (video conferencing allowed exceptionally).
• Candidates must prepare a 10–15 minute presentation.
• Criteria follow UGC Circular No. 01/2024 (accessible at UGC Website).
